LICENCES
All chimney-lining materials in all countries have to be inspected in accordance with the valid standards (EU or national) in an accredited certification institute, with the following characteristics being tested in the case of chimney lining tubes:
- heat resistance;
- corrosion resistance;
- mechanical strength;
- mechanical stability;
- gastightness;
- heat conductance;
- health and environmental impacts.
FuranFlex® was the first and is still the only glass fibre reinforced composite chimney lining tube system.

In order for the official bodies of a country to issue a licence for a new technology such as this tests have to be carried out according to the regulations stipulated by the attestation institute of the country in question. As a result of this FuranFlex® has undergone numerous tests.
However, tests performed by an accredited institute according to EU standards are valid in all EU countries.
The corrosion resistance test, which is especially important in the case of FuranFlex®, was carried out in Austria.
SOME INTERESTING TEST RESULTS
The Hungarian and the first Austrian tests took place according to the following:
The tests themselves were carried out in a special laboratory, in which the FuranFlex® chimney lining tube being tested was installed in a 6-m brick chimney.
THE STEPS FOR DETERMINING HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Gastightness test
- Flue gas at 300 °C flows through the lining tube for a duration of 6 hours
- The chimney is cooled down
- Gastightness test
- Flue gas at 500 °C flows through the lining tube for a duration of 6 hours
- The chimney is cooled down
- Gastightness test at a pressure of 100 Pa

"CHEMISAGE" AND "TUBAGE"
It is interesting to note that the CSTB (Paris) awarded a licence for two types of lining system in the case of FuranFlex®:
In the case of the "Chemisage" test the condition was for FuranFlex® to be in contact with the lined chimney wall at several points.
This is to prevent the lining tube bending or deforming under its own weight. In this case, theoretically, thinner walled FuranFlex® would be sufficient for complying with the criteria.
In the case of the "Tubage" test, FuranFlex® stands in the chimney as a column with a circular cross-section and is not in contact with the chimney wall.
The assumption in this case was that the wall of FuranFlex® must be made out of thicker material, but the tests showed that the original wall thickness of 2.5 mm is suitable in the case of the "tubage" test as well.

Health and Safety
FuranFlex® contains 42% organic materials (e.g. resin), which on heating could emit hazardous molecules. Two institutions, the Dansk Toxicology Center and the Institute für Ökologische Chemie, Germany, tested the material of FuranFlex® and found that in the temperature range of 100-600 °C dangerous, carcinogenic materials are not emitted.
